Personally I'm a bit creeped out by fifty-ish fellers singing the praises of a 17 year old--in public. Bangkok is a whole 'nother story.
The Past Imperfect Tense: “He was ranting”, can in the proper circumstances be felt to imply “he habitually ranted”

Ha!! I'm so so sorry to have to agree with you. It's a little weird to become an older woman, to see it from this vantage.
I've figured out the work around. It could be a memory except for one first person pronoun and a modal.
Instead of I'll never dance with another, it should be I would have danced with no other--remembering the golden oldie's days.
